Braces Q & A

What are dental braces?

Braces are dental appliances used to correct crooked teeth or a misaligned bite. Upon your initial consultation, Dr. Parikh will establish a general treatment plan that includes:

  • Examining your teeth
  • Taking X-rays
  • Making impressions of your teeth

What are the different types of braces?

There are different kinds of braces to accommodate everyone's needs. Dr. Parikh will assign the proper appliance for you, which may involve:

  • Bands
  • Wires
  • Other fixed or removable appliances

How do braces work?

Braces operate by putting pressure on crooked teeth -- and therefore the bone -- to shift them into alignment. It’s a gradual process that continues moving your teeth over an extended period until they are straight and properly aligned.

Braces are made up of many components that all work together to correct your teeth, including:

Brackets

These small squares, made of either stainless steel and ceramic or plastic, are bonded to the front of your teeth.

Orthodontic bands

These bands wrap around each bracket to serve as anchors for the brackets.

Archwires

These metal, or sometimes clear, wires attach to the brackets to guide the shifting of your teeth.

Ties

Made out of rubber or fine wire, ties serve to fasten the archwire to each bracket.

Ligatures

These tiny rubber bands also help keep archwires attached to the brackets and may reduce chafing.

In addition to these, several other components of braces exist to restructure your teeth and attached bone.

How long do I need to wear braces?

Each person wears braces for a different period. Depending mostly on the distance your teeth need to shift, and how much room there is for the movement, some patients can wear braces for several years. The average time, however, is approximately 1-3 years.

Following the removal of your braces, you’ll receive retainers. You’ll wear these removable appliances throughout the day for about the first six months, and then only at night for a couple of years. In general, braces involve a long but rewarding process that’ll leave you eager to show off your smile. Contact Dr. Parikh today to learn how you can get started.
