Veneers vs Cosmetic Dental Bonding 101

The cosmetic world of dentistry has changed dramatically over the last two decades. Advances in materials and technology have changed the way we practice dentistry. One of the most asked about cosmetic procedures are veneers. Veneers are thin porcelain covers on the front of your teeth to change the shape and color of your teeth. Most people say the wish they could do veneers on their teeth if they could, they are a larger investment and tend to scare people away from the procedure. Most patients don’t know that we have an alternative that will take care of most chips, fractures and discrepancies in our teeth shape. Cosmetic dental bonding is a wonderful procedure with new revolutionary material that blends seamlessly with your tooth structure.

Cosmetic dental veneers come in several varieties including non-prep veneers, traditional veneers and wrap-around veneers. The type of veneer and prep chosen depends on your needs and your presenting dentition. No-prep or minimal prep veneers work well for patients needing to add length and/or width to their teeth. An example is someone with a diastema (space between their front teeth), small teeth with spaces or short and thin teeth. A traditional veneer is on a healthy tooth that is already an acceptable color by the patient. A wrap-around veneer will usually wrap around the sides of the tooth and remove any decay between the teeth.

Cosmetic dental bonding is an excellent choice for the majority of cosmetic concerns. The dental bonding materials blend seamlessly with our natural tooth color like never before. Most materials camouflage the existing tooth shade. The original composite resin materials were very opaque and in limited shades, most of those cases didn’t have the ability to blend and they stand out. Cosmetic dental bonding can restore small chips to larger fractures. We can also lighten tooth shade when one tooth is darker than the adjacent teeth. We can close spaces beautifully between teeth with new Bioclear technology and the need for orthodontics can be eliminated. A complete smile transformation can also be achieved with dental bonding and reshaping of worn down teeth.

Most cases would benefit from either option but it becomes a decision with your cosmetic dentist on what meets your needs the best. Investment, longevity, and minimally invasive are the major determining factors. Your dentist should be experienced in both so that they are able to help you choose the best option for you as well.

In everyday life outside of the dental office, I notice that many people walk around hiding their teeth and smile. Possibly from fear of the dentist or scared of the cost.

Palmaia: A progressive wellness vacation: NEW POST

I enjoy traveling for my birthday in March and the kids have bonus days off from school during that time. Starting in 2022, we started the tradition to visit Cancun for a long weekend beach holiday. This year, we were looking for something different and while searching through the American Express’s Fine Hotels and Resorts list, The House of Palmaia popped up on my screen. It read: Palmaia-The House of AiA: Wellness Resort at Riviera Maya. I was immediately intrigued. It isn’t normally my preference to make the drive to the Riviera Maya because I like to keep things simple when traveling with our kids. Short flights and short drives make things  simpler for little people. When I checked out the room options, the first option was a Family King Suite. I was pleased to see they catered to families and I wanted to understand the details of their progressive wellness program. I chose to post about my unique travel experience on my dental blog because it was transformative for my family and me, and I believed it was worth sharing with a wider audience.

From the moment we arrived, we felt a unique ambiance. It’s described as a haven of tranquility and they certainly live up to their reputation. The lobby was calm, quiet and beautiful. They placed these beautiful beaded bracelets on each of our wrists and whisked us away to our room on a golf cart. Even the look and energy of our driver was calm and serene and I can say that about nearly everyone we encountered on our stay. As they drove us down the road, they pointed out the animals we would see nestled in the jungle and the restaurants ,the kids club, and three cenotes to swim in. I was blown away by our room which was an ocean view master suite with a separate kid sized room for my kids, with a bunk bed and their own restroom. Then our nomadic guide Esteban mentioned that the built-in speakers could connect to our phones through bluetooth and that was a first for us. It’s all in the details. The view was absolutely breathtaking on the 5th floor with an ocean view and also a beautiful view of Aia, the mother of Palmaia.

We changed quickly and headed to dinner because it was dinner time. We hopped on the community bikes and made it to dinner in 2 minutes. It was our first time eating vegan food at a luxury resort. We enjoyed Ume, Lek and Mar de Olivio for our dinners. We had lunch at Charly’s vegan taco truck and Su Casa. Our breakfasts were at Su Casa and of course our kid’s took advantage of the included  room service. They were not as fond with the vegan alternatives of their favorites and that was okay and to be expected. The beautiful thing is that Palmaia will let you adjust the menu as you wish. So our kids ate grilled cheese with real cheese and burgers with real beef. The resort is so accepting and accommodating of all of your food preferences. There is no judgment and no preference on their part. I had most of my drinks as mocktails and my hubby enjoyed his cocktails the traditional way and that’s what made dining experience amazing for all.

After nourishing our bellies, we walked down to the Eolo beach club each night to enjoy the live DJ with soothing music, a fire pit and the sand. I’m not a huge dancer but I do have to dance if there is music on the beach, I feel that the two just go together. The kids played at the beach with other kids, playing chase and telling stories. These moments fill my heart.

Now for the most unique part of this resort, the Architects of Life Program. We received the schedule for the week and then specifically for the next day from our nomadic guide on Whatsapp. I was anxious to see what would await us the next day. We chose bread making for the kids while we went to a Drawing Class and then picked up our son to join us at Deep Mantras Level I class. This was all new to us, so we chose to be open minded and see what we would learn. They ask for kids to be over 10 for attending the adult classes and my daughter was happy to stay in the kids club. Later that day, all three of us attended Mind Control with session leader Balder as well.

The next day, I opted to try a Vinyasa class in the morning on the outdoor Mangrove deck followed by Sacred Women’s Circle. That afternoon, we attended Geometry of Power and Deep Mantra’s II class with Balder. We grew fond of him in a couple of days as he shared his insights and knowledge with our family. On our last morning, my hubby and I attended a Meditative concert with the Medicine of Sound creator. It was beautiful and I never would have imagined 15 years ago that I would be meditating in a room with my husband.

It was a peaceful magical experience for my family where we got to enjoy the beach in Mexico and great food, but we all also enjoyed other experiences that we have never experienced before at a Mexican resort or at any resort as a family. The spiritual experiences that we attended with our 10 year-old and our kids for the first time in their lives, asked to go to the kids club every day and they use the Waldorf method and the crafts the bread making painting gardening, even when they weren’t fully played out, my daughter wanted to be part of it like she chose to do lunch with them instead of us today, and she was really fun of her teacher and those sort of experiences for the world to Us

The bikes on property made every small trip down the road an adventure. Riding a bike always brings a smile to my face and brings out a kid like feel. We were nestled between the jungle and the beach. Lots of natural vegetation was present throughout the property. It could be seen over cabanas and in the middle of the pool.

The lounge chairs were different, the cabanas were sustainable. It truly was an experience that we have never had before. It was like all of our beach vacations to Mexico but elevated.

I didn’t set foot in the gym even though I workout 6 days a week at home. I did take a Vinyasa flow class on the Mangrove deck. I took Level I and Level II Deep Mantra classes with my 10 year old son. Watching him engage with the instructor and step in confidently as the only minor in the class was a moment of growth and pride. I enjoyed The Sacred Women’s circle with Lucia immensely because we are in the moment of Aries and I’m an Aries with a birthday around the corner. That afternoon we also attended Baldar’s Geometry of Power which was similar to reading cards but he read a drawing you made in the sand. We asked if my 10 year old could join at the end of class and he was kind to allow him to participate. I enjoyed hearing his readings and listening to the positivity he told my son. I think kids really need to hear those words of positivity from other adults and not just their parents.

If our goal was to enjoy a beach vacation together and learn a few new things, then we accomplished our goals. But I believe when we grow, we feel connected to our true selves. On our last night, we had the best dinner conversation with our 8 and 10 year olds. I had never heard our 8 year old carry the conversation like she did at Mar de Olivo. My husband was using conversation starters but the kids couldn’t get enough of the questions: “What’s your worst fear? What is the hardest thing you’ve ever been through in your life? We have always valued traveling with our kids and expanding their views of the world. Finding a resort that welcomed our children in such a wholesome way was priceless. It allowed us to participate in sessions at our leisure while our kids were happy exploring and learning at the kids club. If you are looking for a new adventure, spiritual growth or learning about progressive wellness, I highly recommend Palmaia. Palmaia has a special place in our hearts.

Spooktacular Halloween Tips for a Healthy Smile in Our Enchanting Neighborhood

October 10, 2023

As the leaves begin to change and a crispness fills the air, we know that Halloween is just around the corner. In our lovely neighborhood, where the children fill the streets on Halloween and they walk past houses adorned with jack-o’-lanterns and eerie decorations, Halloween is truly a sight to behold. As a dentist who’s been part of this community and has celebrated 6 Halloweens, I’ve not only marveled at the beauty of our festive celebrations but also been concerned about the impact of sweet treats on our dental health. Let’s explore some spooktacular Halloween tips and take a stroll down memory lane to remember the TV-like magic that our neighborhood brings to this holiday.

Halloween: A Neighborhood Delight

Our community has always embraced Halloween with open arms, transforming our streets into a scene that seems straight out of a television show. From elaborately decorated front yards to intricately carved pumpkins, every detail is meticulously planned to create an enchanting atmosphere that captures the essence of the holiday. Walking through our neighborhood on Halloween night feels like stepping into a TV-screen, where nostalgia and creativity combine to create unforgettable memories

Ghoulishly Good Oral Health Tips

While we all indulge in the sweet treats that Halloween brings, it’s important to remember that too much sugar can be a real scare for our teeth. Here are some tips to keep your smile healthy and bright during this candy-filled season:

  1. Moderation is Key: Enjoy your favorite Halloween treats in moderation. Instead of gobbling down an entire bag of candy, choose a few favorites and savor them over time.
  2. Timing Matters: Consume sugary treats during mealtime rather than as a standalone snack. This helps to minimize the time your teeth are exposed to sugar and acid.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking water can help wash away sugar and neutralize acids that can harm your teeth.
  4. Don’t Forget to Brush and Floss: Keep up with your oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day, and don’t forget to floss to remove food particles from between your teeth. Halloween night is a great time for parents to step in and assist their children with homecare. I recommend parents help their children up to the age of 10 at least once a week.
  5. Choose Candy Wisely: Opt for candies that dissolve quickly, like chocolate, instead of sticky or hard candies that can cling to your teeth. And for the parents are also the cause of crowns coming out. Stay away from the sticky candy.
  6. Plan Dental Checkups: After the festivities, consider scheduling a dental checkup to ensure your teeth are in tip-top shape.

A Neighborhood United by Magic

As I reminisce about the Halloweens past, it’s evident that our neighborhood’s unity and spirit are the real magic behind our celebrations. Families come together to create hauntingly beautiful displays, and children laugh and play as they traverse our streets dressed as their favorite characters. It’s a time when the community truly shines, fostering a sense of togetherness that warms the heart.

So, as the moon rises and the costumed kids take to the streets once again, let’s cherish the traditions that make our neighborhood an exceptional place to call home. By following these simple oral health tips, we can ensure that the enchantment of Halloween doesn’t cast a spell on our smiles. Here’s to another spellbinding Halloween in our picture-perfect neighborhood!

Brushing up on Back to School Dental Tips

October 10, 2023

As the new school year approaches and we gear up to send our kids back to college, it’s important to prioritize oral health and equip them with the right tools. In this special edition of Bristles Back to School, we’ll share informative tips on maintaining a healthy mouth and suggest key items to add to your shopping list.

School-Age Kids:

This is the perfect time to establish good oral hygiene habits with our children, ensuring that they value their health and hygiene even when away from home. As parents, we play a crucial role in modeling these behaviors. Have your kids grown up watching you diligently brush and floss every night?

For children aged 10 and under, we recommend parents assist with brushing their teeth. This can be a weekly activity to ensure they’re not missing any spots, and it serves as a valuable opportunity to reinforce good techniques.

Designate a day to shop for hygiene products. We made it a fun Target run and I gave my kids lots of options on choosing their own toothbrush and toothpaste. We also chose new body wash, loofahs and lotion for our bodies. They will value what we deem important.

College-Ready:

Preparing for college involves more than just packing clothes and books. Make sure your college-bound student is well-prepared for maintaining their oral health throughout the school year. Here’s a handy checklist:

Electric Toothbrush: Invest in an electric toothbrush with four brush heads for their first year. This will ensure they have the right tools for effective cleaning.

Ample Floss Supply: Stock up on enough floss to last the entire school year. With a surplus of floss, they’ll never have an excuse for skipping this vital step.

Portable Waterpik: Consider purchasing a portable waterpik for kids who haven’t yet embraced flossing. This handy device can provide an alternative and effective way to clean between teeth.

Schedule Dental Visits: Encourage your college student to schedule their semi-annual dental visits during Thanksgiving or winter break and again in the summer. This way, they can prioritize their oral health without compromising their study schedule.

Wisdom Teeth Removal: If wisdom teeth removal is on the horizon, plan and schedule the procedure in advance. Holidays and summer breaks are popular times for such surgeries, ensuring ample recovery time before returning to campus.

Additionally, there are a few crucial topics to discuss with your adult children:

The Rise of Vaping: Inform them about the correlation between vaping and worsened gingivitis, often accompanied by increased bleeding. Awareness can help them make informed choices about their overall health.

Oral Cancer Risks: Highlight the risks associated with alcohol and smoking, including an increased likelihood of oral cancer. Both habits also contribute to dry mouth, which in turn raises the risk of cavities. Encourage them to make wise choices for their long-term oral health.

By following these dental tips and making informed choices, your family can enjoy a healthy smile all year round. Remember, prioritizing oral health is a lifelong journey, and starting early with good habits sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Smile Transformation Case Blog Post:   How Modern Dentistry Can Work Wonders

A confident smile has the power to transform not only one’s appearance but also their self-esteem and overall well-being. In recent years, the field of dentistry has witnessed incredible advancements, enabling individuals to achieve stunning smile makeovers that go beyond aesthetics. One such case involves a patient who embarked on a journey of smile transformation, utilizing clear aligner orthodontics, gingivectomy crown lengthening procedure, and professional whitening. This blog post explores how this patient’s experience exemplifies the incredible potential of modern dentistry to reshape facial structure and boost self-confidence. Our patient began his journey with Dr. Shirley Parikh as his general and cosmetic dentist. The general dentist acts as the quarterback in a multidisciplinary case. Diagnosing and referring to the right specialists for a smooth process.

The journey to a radiant smile can often begin with orthodontic treatment. In this case, the patient opted for clear aligner orthodontics, a discreet and comfortable alternative to traditional braces. Working closely with an experienced orthodontist, the patient’s misaligned teeth were gradually shifted into their optimal positions. Clear aligners not only helped enhance the alignment of the teeth but also contributed to improving the overall facial symmetry and improved his airway.

Gingivectomy Procedures with a Periodontist: While aligned teeth play a crucial role, the health and appearance of the gums are equally important. In some cases, excessive gum tissue can create an uneven gumline, making teeth appear smaller and less attractive. To address this, the patient underwent gingivectomy procedures performed by a skilled periodontist. Gingivectomy involves the precise removal of excess gum tissue, resulting in a harmonious and balanced gumline. This step not only improved the aesthetics but also provided the foundation for the final stunning result.  Professional Whitening for the Perfect Finish With properly aligned teeth and a balanced gumline, the patient’s smile transformation was nearing completion. To add the finishing touch, the patient opted for professional teeth whitening. Years of stains and discoloration were gently lifted, revealing a dazzling, radiant smile. The contrast between the bright teeth and healthy gums showcased the full potential of the smile makeover. The Impact: More Than Just Aesthetic The transformation went beyond aesthetics, positively impacting the patient’s overall facial structure and self-confidence. With the teeth aligned and gums balanced, the patient’s facial features appeared more symmetrical and proportional. The newfound confidence radiated from within, enhancing not only their smile but also their interactions and quality of life.

The case of this patient’s smile transformation is a testament to the remarkable possibilities that modern dentistry offers. Clear aligner orthodontics, gingivectomy procedures, and professional whitening, when orchestrated by skilled professionals, can result in a life-changing makeover. This journey highlights the profound impact that a radiant smile can have on an individual’s self-esteem, facial aesthetics, and overall well-being. As we continue to witness the evolution of dental techniques and technologies, it’s inspiring to envision the countless lives that will be transformed through the art and science of dentistry.

Lets talk about dental bruxism: What is it and what does it mean for me?

One of the most common questions I get in my dental practice is “ My child grinds their teeth at night and can they get a guard” and  “What can I do to stop teeth grinding?”

Most patients are unaware of their nocturnal bruxism and don’t realize that their jaw soreness, neck and shoulder pain are related to their bruxing.

While others are aware and suffering with tooth pain, broken teeth, jaw fatigue, gum recession and oral facial pain from bruxing included head, neck and shoulders.

When it comes to children, root cause is the most important factor because their head and face are still developing. Any deviations from normal development and it can negatively impact the growth of their face. In children, there is a correlation between sleep apnea and nocturnal bruxism. Bruxism usually appears alongside worn down flat teeth, restless sleeping, sweating at night, night terrors, mouth breathing, and allergies. Optimally, our children need to have a full patent airway to sleep well at night and for their face to properly develop. If the child has a tongue tie and the tongue can not rest on the roof of their mouth, their midface will not develop optimally. Children with allergies who can not breathe nasally can also end up as mouth breathers and their tongue will rest on their lower teeth (instead of the roof of their mouth) and will also not develop their midface properly and it can allow the lower jaw to grow vertically.

I recommend my pediatric patients to see an ENT for an evaluation and sleep study or a practitioner to evaluate a tongue tie.

The adult population usually presents with worn down teeth, gum recession, dental abfraction (small notches by the gumline), chips and cracks in their teeth and advanced aging in their dentition. Some patients really notice the muscle pain and strain in their necks and shoulders and jaws.

Treatment options include a custom night guard to protect your teeth from themselves. Therapeutic botulinum toxin to reduce the intensity of the clenching muscles, neck and back muscles. Trigger point therapy to reduce oral facial pain and can include local anesthetic and/or botulinum toxin. The combination of Botulinum toxin and a night guard are a great treatment option for muscle fatigue and muscle soreness from clenching and grinding. Oral facial pain treatment can be treated by your dentist. Night guards are covered by most dental insurance plans.
